FULL FAT; LOW FAT; FAT FREE

Performance Installation/ Dance theatre

Choreographed and Video Directed/Designed by Kieron Jina,

Music by Yogin Sullaphen,

Performed by Bongile Lecoge-Zulu.

Kilojoules in, calories burnt, energy out. Sugar free, caffeine free, aspartame free; high fibre, low GI, low carb, high protein. XS, S, M, L, XXXL. And so it goes. Worlds confined by perceptions of beauty in that dreaded place where consumerism meets obsession and image meets consumption itself. Where everything is reduced to nutritional information on product labels.

Review

By Adrienne Sichel

“The tour de force of this festival was undeniably Kieron Jina’s multimedia Full Fat, Low Fat, Fat Free, performed by Bongile Lecoge-Zulu to Yogin Sullaphen’s original score. The ritual of consumption and obsession with conforming to fashionable criteria at the cost of cultural or personal reality and perception are dominant threads running through this densely layered work. The words “Full Fat, Low Fat, Fat Free” (echoed by three sizes of milk cartons displayed on a steel canteen trolley) are projected on a white sheet.

A woman swathed in a bubble wrap cloak reveals her plus-size body and sashays into projected images of herself. On the video, her face is a mask made out of poured milk. Lecoge-Zulu repeats this action live. In the dance sequences, her fleshy arms exude a confident beauty that is parodied by the comic aerobic exercises. Full Fat, which also interrogates notions of racial stereotyping, is full-blown artistry.”

Reunion Islands has blown me away, inspired and creative… the choreographic residency is an experience of note, i am learning not only about dance/performance but also culture/ language and integration of my culture and artistic voice, choreographic signature is starting to become clear. This experience is like tracing back to the roots of why i love being an artist…Note to self: always go back to recollect and redefine, making sense of the art form. I am inspired to create and understand my placement in my artistic Journey. Motivated, representing South Africa and the world is feeding off the diversity i bring from home…Bonjour!

“Interdisciplinary experimentation using multiple artistic mediums” is one way of describing Kieron Jina’s innovative performance art. “A South African stance on Japanese butoh” is another. Some of his pieces, like Homodryer and Full Fat, Low Fat, Fat Free, have been dubbed “the tour de force” of festivals like the Dance Umbrella. He calls it “grotesque horror reimagined”. But however you try to define his original, forceful, multilayered works — on screen or on stage — one word sums it up: brilliant. Jina uses performance art to tell personal stories that, underpinned by activism, explore societal themes and challenge stereotypes in an effort to captivate, activate and alter audiences’ minds. And they do. With a master’s in dramatic arts from Wits University, 25-year-old Jina is a performance artist, dancer, choreographer, teacher, facilitator, director, cinematographer and video editor. A member of the artistic collaborative, Stash the Suitcase Collective, he is an artist who is constantly seeking new inspiration, experiences and collaborations — both locally and abroad.— Lu Larche

Have you ever felt alone or alienated?

Even though we find ourselves surrounded by people in public, we are alone.

Sometimes being different means people choose not to engage with you.

We ask for help but they just walk past.

I am WAITING….
